Mary Ann Halpin Fine Art Portrait Photography: Bark Avenue Foundation

Last week we participated in a fundraiser, Barking for Bedding, at Villa Firenze, a wonderful home decor store in Studio City. The evening benefited The Bark Avenue Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to ending pet overpopulation through spay and neuter, humane education and community outreach.

It was a fun gathering of people and pets all mingling, playing and making new friends. Lisa Laporta was there from HGTV, love her! I watch her show, "Design to Sell". Bark Avenue brought many little rescue dogs there and some were adopted that night. I wanted to take them all home but alas, I couldn't.

We were there promoting our photography fundraiser, "I Fearlessly Love You Fido" portraits, 2 Saturdays only March 20th & April 17th, sitting fee, $39.95 plus a 30 pound bag of dog food. All of the sitting fee going to Bark Avenue. It should be fun times in the studio! Mary Ann Halpin dances while she shoots. “ I love to photograph the spirit of people and bring the best out of them... their fun, their liveliness. That makes me want to dance.”

Mary Ann also passionately focuses her lens on women’s issues. As author of her first book, “Pregnant Goddesshood: A Celebration of Life”, Mary Ann garnered national attention for her book’s powerful images. Controversial at the time, it portrayed pregnant women as radiant and beautiful, and encouraged women to embrace their pregnant bodies and to celebrate them with photography. Images from “Pregnant Goddesshood” have also been featured in LIFE Magazine. Mary Ann has appeared on television shows such as The View, Inside Edition, and Extra!, where the book sparked heated discussion. As recently as five years ago, an exposed pregnant belly was a threat to the status quo, and considered unsuitable by many. Mary Ann pioneered the trend of pregnant portraits, and now, as the idea has taken off, Halpin has been asked to use her talents on A Baby Story.

As a natural expression of her commitment to see beyond stereotypes, she revealed the many faces of homelessness, which graced many Los Angeles Mission billboards. This led to an invitation by the Los Angeles’ Mission Celebrity Action Council to co-direct a short documentary film with actress Linda Gray about women who are reclaiming their lives in the Mission’s rehabilitation program.

Mary Ann and her husband, studio manager, Joe Croyle, divide their time between their studio in Los Angeles and their Pine Mountain home.
